What We Need in Trials

February 11, 2018 Pastor: Verne Nakasone Series: James

Passage: James 1:5–1:8

OVERVIEW:

This letter displays the care of James for the believers scattered abroad due to persecution (1:1b). James addresses the most immediate need pressing against these believers.

  • James reminds them of the reality of trials
  • James informs them of the purpose of trials
  • James communicates the appropriate God-glorifying response to trials

NOTES:

1A. WHAT WE LACK IN OUR TRIALS? (1:5a)
2A. WHAT IS THE WISDOM WE LACK? (Proverbs 9:10; Proverbs 3:7)
“wisdom” (σοφός sophós) – A skillful expert in the affairs of life and practice.
The wisdom of God is a gift from God that begins by beholding the character of God and results in skillfully living life for the glory of God by walking in the ways of God.
God’s gift of wisdom is so that the godly may both discern and carry out the will of God. Wisdom is needed to perceive God’s purpose for the trial and skillfully applying the Word of God.
3A. HOW TO RECEIVE THE WISDOM WE LACK? (1:5b-8)
1B. Ask God
2B. Ask in Faith
The wisdom you need, and the wisdom God has promises is available to you. You must not be reluctant or hesitant to approach God. You may boldly and with confidence bow before the throne of grace that you may receive grace to help in your time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
