The Test of True Religion, Part 2

April 15, 2018 Pastor: Verne Nakasone Series: James

Passage: James 2:1–2:7

OVERVIEW:

This letter began with James’ pastoral care for these believers scattered abroad and encountering trials of various kind. James focused on preciousness of faith and the importance of remaining faithful even in the midst of trials. This is a description of the Christian life, it is a walk of faith (not sight).

James discusses that our faith is connected to living as we act in harmony with what we believe. Acting in harmony with what we believe is the essence of true religion as mentioned in 1:26-27. True religion controls their tongue, has compassion on the widows and orphans, and is committed to holiness. James now addresses another characteristic of true religion.

NOTES:

1A. THE INSIGHT (2:1)
1B. The prohibition
2B. The Person
3B. The precept
2A. THE ILLUSTRATION (2:2-3)
1B. Two people enter the assembly
2B. Two people treated differently
3A. THE INTERROGATIVES (2:4-7)

2B. Partiality dishonors God’s ways, verse 5

Faith and favoritism are incompatible. Believers are to be welcoming, receiving, and friendly, pointing people to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory so that people will give glory to God and live for the glory of God
