The Test of Faith is Action

May 13, 2018 Pastor: Verne Nakasone Series: James

Passage: James 2:14–2:20

OVERVIEW:

Following James’ discussion about true religion and its characteristics, he now transitions to the core matter. Addressing the characteristics of living faith in contrast with dead faith. This is perhaps the most important subject of the entire letter.

NOTES:

1A. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DEAD FAITH
1B. The Claim
2B. The Confession
3B. The Conclusion
2A. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING FAITH
1B. The Claim
2B. The Confession
3B. The Conclusion
1C. Faith in Christ is committing your life to Christ
2C. Faith in Christ is consecrating your life to Christ

James’ original purposes were to protect these believers from false teaching. He also sought to position them to challenge those promoting such false teaching. For the believer, James’ words are preventive because genuine faith is displayed by action. This passage ought not to unsettle the one who has genuine faith.

For the unbeliever, these verses are corrective. It is to cause the one whose faith is not living to recognize the real danger of dying without knowing Jesus.
