The Test of Faith - Watch Your Words, Part 1
Passage: James 3:1–3:4
This morning, we arrive at another test of faith. The test of our speech and words. James instructs us to watch our words. Our struggle with our speech exposes the inescapable flaw of 10 out of 10 people present today.
The significance of this chapter is that it contains the single most sustained discussion on the use of the tongue.
1A. THE INSIGHT ABOUT THE TONGUE, ESPECIALLY AS IT RELATES TO TEACHING (3:1-2)
1B. The caution about the tongue, verse 1a.
• Believers are to be the teachers in the church
• Teachers are to led by God to teach in the church
2B. The certainty about the tongue, verse 1b.
Two primary motivations in honoring God as a teacher in the church:
• Loving God
• Loving one another
3B. The concern about the tongue, verse 2.
• The statement about humility
• The standard about self-control
2A. THE ILLUSTRATION ABOUT THE TONGUE, ESPECIALLY AS IT RELATES TO TEACHING (3:3-4)
1B. The illustration of bits in horses’ mouths, verse 3.
2B. The illustration of a very small rudder on large ships, verse 4.
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
