The Test of Faith - Wars and Fights Within, Part 1
Passage: James 4:1–4:3
The letter of James is extremely practical. The subject today is conflicts and these verses reveal God’s wisdom by exposing what conflicts are and why conflicts exist.
1A. THE REALITY OF CONFLICTS (4:1a)
1B. Realize that the presence of conflicts is the norm.
2B. Recognize that wars and fights are the products of conflict (John 10:10; 1 Peter 5:8-9a; 1 Corinthians 13:4-7; Galatians 5:19-22)
2A. THE REASON FOR CONFLICTS (4:1b-11)
1B. The potential for conflict begins with desire, verse 1b.
2B. The progression of conflict intensifies with demands, verse 2a.
3B. The product of conflict includes judgment
3A. HOW TO REPAIR CONFLICT
1B. I must devote myself to prayer, verses 2b-3.
2B. I must dedicate myself to friendship with God and follow God’s ways rather than the world and the world’s ways, verse 4.
3B. I must be led by the Holy Spirit, verse 5.
4B. I must possess an attitude of humility before God, verses 6 and 10.
5B. I must submit myself to God, verse 7.
6B. I need to resist the devil, verse 7.
7B. I am to draw near to God, verse 8.
8B. I am to live a clean life and possess a pure heart (being broken over my sin), verses 8-9
9B. I am to forgive and not speaking evil, verse 11a.
10B. I am to forgive and stop judging, verse 11b.
Discerning these insights is the starting place for preserving and maintaining peaceful relationships (Ephesians 4:1-6; Psalm 133).
