Humility and God's Will
Passage: James 4:13–4:17
The letter of James presents truths concerning practical Christian living. James points us to two key words when it comes to practically living the Christian life:
- Faith – Trusting God
- Humility – Dependence upon God
1A. THE PLANS WE MAKE ARE NOT TO BE PRESUMPTUOUS (4:13-14)
1B. Our natural perception about the future, verse 13.
1C. We presume we are in control of time
2C. We presume we are in control of what we do.
3C. We presume we are in control of the results
2B. The problem we must acknowledge, verse 14.
1C. The uncertainty of tomorrow
2C. The uncertainty of life
“Only one life ‘twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last” C.T. Studd
2A. THE PURPOSES OF GOD ARE TO DIRECT OUR PLANS (4:15-16)
1B. The principle of life, verse 15.
2B. The prohibition to boasting, verse 16.
3A. THE PURSUIT OF GOD IS TO BE OUR PRIORITY (4:17)
James contrasts two kinds of people.
1B. The one knows and does not do
2B. The one who knows and does
- Begin and conclude each day acknowledging your dependence upon God and your desire to do the will of God
- Throughout the day, acknowledge your dependence upon God and your desire to do God’s will
- Conduct yourself in this Biblically distinct manner
