Humility and the Coming of the Lord, Part 2

November 4, 2018 Pastor: Verne Nakasone Series: James

Passage: James 5:7–5:8

OVERVIEW:

On the first Sunday of each month, we partake of the bread and cup in remembrance of the cross of Christ as instituted by Jesus Himself in Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, and Luke 22:19-20. This institution we call The Lord’s Supper was also delivered by Jesus to the Apostle Paul for the church in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. Notice the event referred to in verse 26, “… you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.”

We are to continually eat bread representing the body of Jesus and drink from the cup which represents the blood that He shed “till He comes.”

The Lord’s Supper is prophetic. It looks back to the past, pointing to the cross and the first coming of the Lord Jesus. It also look ahead to the future, pointing to the return of Christ and Jesus’ second coming.

The main message of 5:7-12 is an exhortation for the Christian to be patient.

NOTES:

1A. THE REASONS BEHIND THIS EXHORTATION (5:7-12)
1B. The nature of the harvest, verse 7.
1C. THE MEANING OF PATIENCE
“patient” - This word means to be long-tempered rather than short-tempered.
To be patient is not a call to passive resignation, but to an attitude of self-restraint that enables one to refrain from swift retaliation in the face of opposition and provocation.
2C. THE MEASURE OF PATIENCE IS WAITING “waits” – The actual word means to spend completely, to be totally exhausted, to sacrifice and give of one’s self wholly.
3C. THE MANIFESTATION OF PATIENCE IS WITHIN MY HEART
“Establish your hearts” – Make firm your hearts. James is calling the Christian to search within their own hearts. Am I really committed to being long-suffering and to lovingly serve people?
2B. The nearness of the coming of the Lord, verse 8.
*2 Peter 3:10-13
1C. WE SHOULD LIVE HOLY AND GODLY LIVES
2C. WE SHOULD LOOK FORWARD TO THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST
3C. WE SHOULD PRAY FOR THE LORD’S RETURN
